Beware of Emails with a “Protected Voicemail Attachment”

These messages will often appear to come from one of your contacts. Opening the message will redirect you to a malicious website.

Below is an email we recently encountered. There are some red flags we will point out to help keep you safe from these attacks.

So, what can I do to stay safe from this kind of attack?

  • Look at the attachment closely and in our example, it ends in .htm which is clearly a website. We have also seen these attachments as .wav or .mp3 files trying to make it look legitimate.
  • You will also notice the use of your email address in the body of the message trying to trick you.  Be wary of these messages to on the stay safe side.
  • Before clicking on any link, you should always reach out to your IT Department first to help protect sensitive data and keep from infecting computers with malware.
